The Return

What Solar Saves in Edinburgh

For a typical three bedroom Edinburgh home, a 3.5kW system without battery storage is a common choice. Here is how the annual benefit breaks down.

£366

Saved on electricity bills

Around half the electricity generated is used directly in the home, roughly 1,400 kWh, replacing units that would otherwise cost 26.11p each.

£151

Earned from exports

The remaining 1,400 kWh goes back to the grid under the Smart Export Guarantee, at an average tariff of 10.8p per kWh.

£517

Total annual benefit

Bill savings and export income combined, for a 3.5kW system on a typical Edinburgh home.

Based on a 3.5kW system producing around 3,500 kWh under standard test conditions, derated to roughly 2,800 kWh to reflect Edinburgh's northern latitude and weather patterns. The import rate is taken from the Ofgem price cap for 1 July to 30 September 2026. The export rate is the average Smart Export Guarantee tariff offered across the market, which ranges from around 3p to 25p per kWh depending on supplier. Your own savings will vary with your electricity rate, the export tariff you secure, your usage pattern and the sunlight at your location.

What Happens On The Day

The Installation, Step by Step

  1. Survey and scaffolding

The installer surveys the roof condition and tile arrangement, then sets up scaffolding suited to the property, from an East Edinburgh bungalow to an Old Town tenement.

  2. Mounting and panels

Selected tiles are lifted so hooks can be fixed into the rafters, then replaced with waterproof flashing, custom cut for traditional Scottish slate where needed. Rails go on, then the panels.

  3. Electrical integration

Panels connect to the inverter and the inverter to the property supply. Isolators and an Ofgem approved generation meter are fitted, and the installer coordinates grid connection with the local Distribution Network Operator.

  4. Commissioning and certification

Safety and performance testing, documentation and warranties handed over, and the system registered with the Microgeneration Certification Scheme.

Reducing The Cost

Edinburgh Solar Grants and Schemes

Several schemes can reduce or offset the upfront cost of a solar installation in Edinburgh. Eligibility depends on your circumstances and property.

0% VAT

Domestic solar installations in Edinburgh currently carry a zero rate of VAT. In practice that is around 20% off compared with a standard VAT rated installation. See the gov.uk guidance.

Until 31 March 2027

ECO4 Scheme

Households receiving qualifying benefits whose home has poor energy efficiency may be eligible for funding. Solar can be included where the property and heating setup are suitable. See the council guidance.

Closes 31 December 2026

Warmer Homes Scotland

The Scottish Government programme offers support worth up to £10,000 or more for eligible households struggling with heating costs. Recommended improvements commonly include heating and insulation, with some renewable technologies potentially available. See Home Energy Scotland.

Before You Enquire

Common Questions

Is the quote really free?

Yes. There is no charge for the quote and no obligation to proceed after receiving it.

Who contacts me, and how many companies?

One. Your details are passed to a single vetted local installer covering your postcode, who contacts you directly to arrange the quote. They are not distributed to a panel of companies competing for the job. Solar Panels Edinburgh does not carry out installation work.

Will I need planning permission in Edinburgh?

In the large majority of cases, no. There are specific exceptions where approval from the City of Edinburgh Council is required.

Permission may be needed if panels protrude more than 200mm from the roof or wall surface and extend above the highest part of the roof, excluding the chimney. Properties in conservation areas and listed buildings require prior consent, which is particularly relevant given Edinburgh's World Heritage Site status. Flats and apartments may also need permission where panels would sit on shared property.

Do solar panels actually work in Edinburgh's weather?

Yes. Solar panels do not need direct sunlight to generate electricity, only daylight. Modern panels harness indirect light effectively, so overcast days and shorter winter hours still produce useful output.

Edinburgh's longer summer days also mean a system here can produce more in summer than similar installations further south, which helps offset lower winter production.

Does my roof need to face south?

No. A south facing roof gives the highest annual yield, but east and west facing roofs in Edinburgh can still deliver roughly 80 to 90% of a south facing system's output.

Pitch and shading matter more than orientation, and the installer carries out a shade analysis as part of the quote.

How long does the installation take?

For domestic properties the work is usually completed within a day or two. This covers mounting the panels, fitting the inverter and connecting the system to the property's electrical network. Commercial installations vary considerably with size and complexity.

How quickly will I hear back?

Most enquiries are contacted within one working day.

Can a battery be added later?

The entry level package uses a hybrid inverter, which is designed to support battery storage being added afterwards without replacing the inverter. Whether that suits your property is something the installer confirms as part of the quote.

What happens to my details?

They are passed to one local installer so they can prepare your quote. They are not sold on. ReachAI Ltd is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office under reference ZB828222. Full detail is in the privacy policy.
